Only 460 cases produced. Final inventories available here. About the VineyardLamborn Family Vineyards is located at 2,200 feet above sea level, high atop Howell Mountain, Napa Valley. The mountain's volcanic soil combined with its split canopy trellising (more sunlight) provides the small-lot 4 acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard with ideal growing conditions. This environment produces Cabernets of the highest quality and intensity; all handcrafted by Heidi Barrett (dubbed the first lady of wine by Robert Parker).Summary of Tasting EventThis wine was tasted on October 18th, 2007 by 8 people in a blind tasting format and paired with grilled Buffalo Steak. The nose is initially a bit closed but opens to reveal a very pure caramel in the background. In the mouth it is quite rich with medium, supple tannins, good balancing acidity and a very long finish. In general, we found the 2004 to be a tightly knit wine (young wines that have good acidity levels, good tannin levels, and are well made) that will age extremely well. It will drink well over the next few years and should also show well 10 to 15 years from now. It was the perfect accompaniment to grilled buffalo steak.
Tasting NotesOur mission is to provide unbiased opinions of the wine being offered. These notes come from up to 10 guests who tasted this wine in a blind tasting format (wine is concealed so their identity is unknown). Why this format? Tasting blind completely throws out any hype associated with a certain winery, style, price point, etc; it forces the taster to accept what is in the glass without any predetermined notions. Our guests utilize Robert Parker's Glossary of Wine Terms for their comments for consistency purposes. In addition, we utilize the wine aroma wheel to enhance ones ability to describe the complexity of wine flavor. Notes are posted on this wine during the tasting to ensure they accurately reflect the impressions.Selected Wine Tasting Notes
FF: Nice nose with hints of floral and caramel. First impression is the wine is young but has a smooth chocolate finish. Great with Buffalo, brought out the fruit in the wine.
BH: Not oaked. Good caramel nose. Classic young Cab.
DJO: Berry and vegetative flavors, a little asparagus.
SDL: Caramel nose went great with the buffalo.
RA: Complex and decadent flavors, a little young but should age well.
JO: Nice tannins. Tight but very well balanced.
Technical Data
Heidi's Tasting Notes(Tasted July 14, 2007) This mountainside estate cabernet is very dark ruby in color with lovely aromas of blackberry, currants, black cherry, and sweet toasty caramel & cocoa. It has wonderful purity of flavor and a remarkable "chewy" texture that is very enticing. This is a big, elegant mouthful of cabernet with a lot of finesse and personality. Flavors last for several minutes. This is a unique wine from the top of Howell Mountain that definitely shows off the special flavor profile of the estate vineyard. Very well balanced.Recipe: Grilled Buffalo SteakINGREDIENTS:
